A busy week this week! I have a project due, finals coming up, and a lot of lectures to catch up on. I’ve been on a bit of a reading slump lately but I’m hoping to get back to it.

This book is so cheesy I’m not sure whether I want to sigh in exasperation or squeal with delight. There’s no denying that the book’s couple tugs at your heartstrings, but I’m hoping for more substance than a few romantic tropes.

I think that this is the longest audiobook I have ever listened to – the book was 561 pages, making the audiobook 19 hours flat. The book was pretty dark (as expected of Stephen King) and sometimes it felt draining to listen to. I think I’ll be picking up shorter audiobooks in the future.

Just finished this book and wow. I forgot how much I missed reading classic YA adventure novels. I loved reading this book – it had great characters, a thrilling adventure, and an amazing world to explore. Review for this one coming soon!

How could one read this title and be not intrigued? I started this book a long time ago but abandoned it a few chapters in once life got too busy. I grabbed this audiobook off my university library and am looking forward to trying this dark comedy once more.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION

Do the star ratings a book receives on Goodreads or retail sites affect whether you buy the book or not?

More often than not when deciding on a book I look at the number of reviews or ratings it has before deciding to read it. I realize that a lot of people have differing opinions so I tend to avoid basing all of them on reviews, but I like to think that a book that has a lot of readers (even if not all the opinions on them are good) is a book worth reading. There should be a reason they’ve gained traction after all!

Do you guys check Goodreads for the star ratings? Let me know in the comments!

I finally finished my bioengineering midterm (my last college midterm)! Studying put a halt to my reading and writing but hopefully I can pick it up before finals and projects are due. I promise I’ll get to writing reviews soon!

Anyway, back to my reading of the week!

The last book in my O.W.L. readathon! Found an audiobook of The Institute for free from Tokybook, and it’s a whopping 19 hours! I had to start immediately to try and finish before April ends. I’m only 30% in, better pick it up!

I needed a little bit of cheesy romance to balance out the dark mood of Stephen King’s novel. I might watch the movie after reading the book as Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton look too adorable to ignore.

This turned out to be a pretty decent read, though the romance left something to be desired. I’m midway through writing a review as well and hopefully can post that up ASAP.

I borrowed this audiobook from my university library’s Overdrive account, and I realized that there’s only 9 days left until I need to return it. I was midway through before changing to The Institute, since this has been a pretty dull listen so far.

Hope you’re all doing well! Stay safe and let me know what you guys are reading ❤

Book Blogger Hop: In What Order Do You Read?

The Book Blogger Hop is a book meme hosted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer where you answer a weekly prompt featuring a book related question. This way you have a chance to check out other people’s blogs and gain new followers yourself.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION

How do you decide the order of reading your books?

I like taking my books on one at a time. Often I’m reading three books at once – a physical book, an ebook, and an audiobook. Once I finish one I hunt for the next book in that medium I can find. A lot of times this is directed by the reading challenges I like doing. This year I’m taking on the Ultimate Popsugar 2020 Reading Challenge and I pick a random book from that list.

What order do you guys read your books? Let me know!

I started watching Westworld season 2 (and it’s as mind-blowing as ever – watch it if you can!) and so have been more than a little distracted. Nevertheless, I was able to read a few books this week and have more to look forward to!

I’m still in the middle of this one after last week. In the aftermath of some heated battles there’s a lull in the action and I’m finding it harder to keep going. I’m hoping to see a little more magic and mayhem before the book ends.

I picked up another audiobook this week, from the acclaimed writer of Six of Crows, though this seems a far cry from the young adult novels Bardugo is famous for. There’s a lot of creepy mystery and superstition so far, and it’s got my nerves on edge.

I finished this audiobook over the weekend, binge listening to it for a few hours in bed. Those who talked about a mind-blowing plot twist at the end of this book were not exaggerating – I had to rewind the chapter just to make sure I was hearing straight.

With Kindle Unlimited I have a chance to listen to this audiobook of what sounds like a heartfelt contemporary novel. It gives me The Little Prince vibes, and that made me cry my heart out.

Well, here goes nothing! The last book for my O.W.L. readathon feels pretty intimidating. What seems like a common YA premise is about to be given the Stephen King treatment, and I’m curious (and apprehensive) to see how that turns out.

This has been a good week of reading so far, but I have a midterm coming up (the last one I’ll ever have to take) on the 20th so I might take a little break from reading to study. Hope everyone stays safe and inside as the month goes on! Let me know what you guys are reading!

With my impromptu decision to take on the Magical Readathon many of my current reads were put on hold to tackle this challenge.

The first book in my O.W.L. readathon! I chose this one to read because I needed to fulfil my fantasy craving. The book has a classic, old-timey writing style to it that I’m enjoying. I’m also liking the main character, a feisty and stubborn girl whose love-hate relationship with the Dragon is quite entertaining.

I decided to grab this audiobook after seeing that it won the Goodreads 2019 Choice Award for Mysteries and Thrillers. I am also fascinated with the unspeaking Alicia Berenson, who murdered her husband in cold blood.

I decided to change my book for the Astronomy prompt for the O.W.L. readathon, because I need to fulfil my fantasy craving before reading the dark and scary The Institute by Stephen King. This fairytale inspired book seems like just the thing to read snuggled up in bed. I’m ready for a grand adventure!

This is shaping up to be a very, very good read. The world building is just fantastic, and Adeyemi creates a magical world that manages to mirror many of our world’s failings. The characters are all on point. I’m excited to see what else lies in wait for Zélie and the rest.

I’m halfway through this one and am pretty conflicted about it so far. The characters are more than a little frustrating to read and ‘the farm’ doesn’t seem to be anything special. I’m hoping there’s some character development soon.

This one was…pretty disappointing to be honest. I was expecting a creepy, chilling thriller but the ending was a huge let down. Props to the narrator Imogen Church for making this as entertaining as she could.

I’ve been itching to read a graphic novel without committing to 20 volumes and found this standalone gem. It’s been praised as powerful and touching, and I’m ready for the tears to come.
